The energy performance certificate (EPC in Flanders, PEB in Wallonia and Brussels) is mandatory when a house, flat or other building is sold or rented out in Belgium. It gives buyers and tenants an idea of the property's energy costs.

The EPC score

The score is expressed in kWh/m² per year and shown on a coloured scale. In Flanders the scale runs from A+ (very efficient) to F (very inefficient); in Wallonia and Brussels it runs from A++ to G.

Renovation obligation in Flanders

Since 2023, buyers of a residential building in Flanders with label E or F must renovate it to at least label D within 5 years. This obligation applies in Flanders only.
